If you sneak up on them from behind, you can get a preemptive strike, though you can't sneak up on those who are acting as gates, or on bosses.Īlso there's a hub that you can repair with a special currency you get from killing dragons and I live for that.Ĭombat - you control a team of 3 characters that can be any of 5 classes: Samurai (standard attacker), Trickster (kinda like a rogue), Destroyer (Big Damage), Psychic (mage), and Hacker (the really cool one that I recommend everyone try out - great support class). Also, dragons - of which there are 200 - appear on the map. There's also an ability to instantly encounter an enemy, which is great for grinding (though there's never really a need for it). Early on you get a radar that changes colour based on how close the next encounter is, and you can buy items and unlock abilities that greatly reduce how quickly the radar changes colour. Oops, did I say random encounters? Well here's the thing - they're not actually that bad here. Funds are quite limited to begin with but like many other games, this becomes less of an issue further down the line. This game does a really good job of making you feel powerful while still making the dragons feel threatening, which gives you freedom to experiment without making it too easy to break the game. Some bosses I had to try 2 or 3 times, and I don't remember how many times I had to retry the final boss (somewhere between 5-10 most likely). Bosses however, always present a challenge. The further you progress along the game, the less threatening random encounters become. Gameplay - I played on easy, and I felt as if the game gave me a very good challenge. So of course I recruited one and named him Narukami. ![]() Also the default male samurai art looks very much like a certain other sega related sword-wielding JRPG protagonist. Some animations are recycled across moves but may have different effects to differentiate them. ![]() The battle animations are simple, but quick and punchy, and never feel like they dragon drag on too long. The actual character models ingame are chibi which works quite well. My favourite was probably the Ikebukuro Railcage, because of how small it makes you feel when you first enter.Īrtwork - The character portraits have some sharp linework, which I love. We probably didn't need 3 variations of a subway, but the rest of the environments were cool so I'll happily let it slide. Also if you do a certain sidequest you can unlock a version of the soundtrack with Hatsune Miku's vocals.Įnvironments - I really like the theming of each dungeon. Music - not really something I'd listen to outside of the game, but works well within each environment. Ther are about 8 chapters and the game took me about 40 hours to complete, including all sidequests. Okay, the dragons aren't exactly comparable to most final bosses but you get the picture. 7th Dragon breaks tradition here by starting with fighting God. There are many jokes about how JRPGs start with Chapter 1: find lost cat. The plot twists aren't exactly original, but they keep the plot engaging. And also with a much less oppressive atmosphere. Think Shin Megami Tensei but instead of demons, it's dragons. Story - you start out as a recruit of a dragon hunting organisation, some stuff happens, dragons take over Japan. The entire feel of the game is silly enough that it doesn't take itself too seriously but doesn't become so silly that the more serious moments would lose all of their impact. Each part on its own doesn't stand out particularly much but I feel almost everything is just as it needed to be. Everything about the game just works in such a way that it is truly greater than the sum of its parts. I didn't have high expectations for the game, but I was interested as I'd heard good things about other games from this developer, and figured "hey it's 2020, may as well give that 7th Dragon 2020 game a shot" and I am glad that I did. Thankfully there is a decent translation patch available. 7th Dragon 2020 is a documentary JRPG developed by the now-defunct Imageepoch (Luminous Arc, Stella Glow) and was published exclusively in Japan by Sega, and I genuinely feel as if we've been robbed.
